Samuel Francis Smith

As many of your were watching the World Cup match yesterday pitting England vs. the United States, did you happen to catch the national anthems?

Did you notice that the tune to God Save The Queen sounded a little familiar?

I noticed that a few Olympics ago and did some research on why that sounded so familiar.

It is because in 1831 Samuel Francis Smith composed ‘America’ or ‘My Country ‘Tis of Thee’ to the same melody as ‘God Save The Queen’. Wikipedia states that Smith encountered the tune through a German adaptation but the fact that this song served as the National Anthem until the adoption of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ some years later.

While I somewhat believe he did not do it on purpose, I do still find it humorous that we used this as our national anthem…talk about a slap in the face to England!
