No ones story matters more than our own. What we experienced on that day.

I was a high school senior, and was in the school library when the first plane hit. I was unaware of what was going on until I got to 3rd period (we had block scheduling) AP English. I walked into the room, in time to see the second plane hit the tower. We watched intently, in silence. Our teacher turned the tv off and looking back, I’m not sure that was the wrong decision to make. The teacher in the room next door came over and told our teacher that she needed to turn the tv back on because one ofnthe towers had just collapsed.

Our teacher reluctantly turned it back on and we watched the other tower fall in silence. As the day progressed, the school became more and more quiet. We walked to our classes, there was minimal talking in the halls and even lunch was quiet.

When the final bell rang that school day, no one ran for the doors. It was like we all wanted to stay together, because for the rest of our lives, whe we think about that day, we will remember who we experienced it with.

In the days to come we would learn that our school libraian who was on Capital Hill giving a presentation was evacuated with the Congressmen fleeing the Capital Building, our 10th grade English teacher’s brother wasn’t at his desk at the Pentagon when the plane hit and Flight 93 had flown directly over us before and after making it’s U-turn back towards the coast.

I have had many individuals in my life since who have been in the Armed Forces…each of them thankfully have come back safely. As two more of them are set to leave again soon, I pray for their safety and safe return to their friends and families.

It is a time to begin planning for the next year of educational programming and thinking about what we want things to look like a year from now.  As I was cleaning up my office on Friday I realized that there are a lot of things that I am looking forward to working on in the next 366 days (YAY Leap Year!) but in order to do so, I’m going to have to do a lot of cleaning…cleaning out my office and my calendar of things that are not helping me get to that place.

Tomorrow starts a new year!

I can’t wait to see how this will impact my programming and what I can share because of this new tool!

A year from now, I will be getting married and moving (if not sooner) again then.

On Friday I started cleaning things up…I am tired of living like this and feeling like my stuff controls me and not the other way around. I know I am not nearly as bad as the people of Horders, but it worries me!

I got rid of two garbage bags of clothes and some recycling too. My biggest challenge is filing and not piling. That is the task of the week…even though it is the week before fair and I should be concentrating on getting sleep.

I know that these people are not your average day fans that are learning and respecting the Big Ten schools and traditions. It is still annoying!

Last Christmas, my mom got me a day to day calendar made by the writers of 1,000 places to see before you die. I’ve been saving the ones that seem interesting to me. But what if it is really the ones I am not so keen on seeing, the ones I toss aside, that are really the ones worth seeing?

I hope you learn that our traditions are just as important to our conference as Texas was to the Big 12. And don’t mind Wisconsin…they are just obnoxious, to everyone!
